2005-07 Saddle Mountain, OR

July 30, 2005: Saddle Mountain is the highest peak in Northwest Oregon (3283'); the trail to the summit from the parking lot (1610') is about 7 miles round-trip. Along the way there are some interesting rock formations, including a very long and thin basaltic dike, and while there were some nice wildflower meadows near the top, we missed the peak display by a few weeks. From the summit, we could see Mt. Jefferson, Mt. Hood, Mt. Adams, Mt. St. Helens, Mt. Rainier, and even the Olympic Mountains far to the north -- and a long stretch of the coast and the Pacific Ocean, of course.

By the way, this trail is not for the acrophobic or the clumsy; the last half-mile can be a little harrowing. (On the other hand, if you want to stare down the sides of steep cliffs, be sure to check out the little spur trail to the north, just below the summit.)
