July 14, 2005: This was one of the best hikes I've ever done. The trailhead isn't too hard to get to (only the last couple of miles of road are unpaved), and the wildflowers on the slopes of Bald Mountain and then from timberline on up are incredible in July. There were a few annoying flies, but not nearly as many as there would be a few weeks later in the season.
If you go: there are a lot of options once you reach the Timberline Trail, and I highly recommend William Sullivan's 100 Hikes in Northwest Oregon to help you make sense of it. On this trip, we hiked north (clockwise) for a short distance to the posted McNeil Point trail, which we followed uphill and south to the stone shelter; then we descended the very steep trail back to the Timberline Trail on Bald Mountain Ridge. But you can also bypass McNeil Point altogether, cross the western fork of Ladd Creek, and continue clockwise to Eden Park and/or Cairn Basin. Or, I'm told, you can set out cross-country from the shelter and just keep walking up the mountain until you run into the glaciers! I'll try that next summer...
