May 28, 2005: The Mirror Lake/Tom, Dick, & Harry Mountain trail is 6 miles round-trip. The first half, from a large turnout on U.S. Highway 26 (3400' elevation) to Mirror Lake (4150'), is full of families with dogs and kids. The small lake itself is surrounded by all kinds of wet-habitat wildflowers.
The second half of the hike, from the lake to the western crest of Tom Dick & Harry Mountain (4920') is much less crowded, and offers about as expansive a view as you can get with so little effort. From the top, Mt. Hood dominates the view, but you can also easily see Mt. Jefferson, Mt. Adams, and Mt. St. Helens -- plus, I assume, Mt. Rainier on a clearer day. The middle and eastern peaks of the mountain (Dick & Harry? Tom & Dick?) are off-limits because they're peregrine falcon habitat.
Other nature notes: We were repeatedly divebombed by a pugnacious hummingbird on a hillside; and this trip was Teresa's and my first-ever sighting of devil's club, which is scary-looking enough when fully grown, but even creepier when it's first coming out of the ground in the spring.
