I was going to camp near the South Climb Trailhead the night before, but I was nervous about the new Williams Mine Fire, so I spent the night further down the mountain. In the morning, I went ahead and did my hike (at a faster pace than usual), keeping an eye on the growing fire to the west. When I returned to the trailhead, USFS personnel were there, evacuating the entire Wilderness. Later that day, the fire crossed the South Climb Road; it eventually burned more than 20 square miles.
