In 2016, a new section of the Timberline Trail (dark blue) was constructed that crosses Eliot Creek west of Cloud Cap; this route is relatively safe but very long.
The turquoise line shows the approximate location of the "boot paths" that were used until 2016; this shorter route may still be feasible, but parts of it are subject to major erosion.
If you want to go up onto Eliot Glacier and avoid the stream entirely, the green line is the best place to cross with a minumum of glacier-related hazards. The western moraine is the trickiest part of the glacier route: the ONLY place you can safely get down onto the glacier (or up off of it) is at about 7300', below a couple of east-facing cliffs. It's a jumbled pile of debris beneath those cliffs, but most of the rocks are big enough to stay put when you walk on them.
The red line is an example of a way one might cross higher up on the glacier, but BE CAREFUL! There are crevasses, caves, loose rock, etc., and it's constantly changing. This route is for experts only -- and only early in the season when it's covered in deep snow, or later when all the hazards are visible.
If you follow any of these paths, you do so at your own risk. Know your own limitations.
